Empowering young engineers to act on sustainable development.

The engineering profession is pivotal in addressing the global challenges of sustainability and climate resilience. Young engineers are uniquely positioned to drive innovation and change, given their fresh perspectives and adaptability. However, they often lack the support, resources, and platforms necessary to develop their skills and make their voices heard.

The #EngineeringChange campaign is designed to bridge this gap by providing tools, resources, and opportunities for young engineers to lead sustainable development initiatives and advocate for change within the engineering profession and beyond.

In 2023, we undertook an international consultation of young engineers and engineering managers to understand the perceptions, barriers, and opportunities around implementing sustainable development practices in engineering work worldwide.

Launched at COP28, this report summarises the key findings of this consultation and lays out a path forward for the campaign.

Who can participate?

Why young engineers?

  • Young engineers are critical to driving sustainable development. They bring innovative ideas and are essential for integrating sustainability into engineering projects.
  • Climate change impacts young people disproportionately. Young engineers have the technical expertise to implement sustainable development practices to mitigate climate change effects.
  • Young engineers are the future leaders of the profession. Their attitudes and actions today will shape the engineering industry’s approach to sustainability and resilience for years to come.

Our Ambition

  • Increase the number of young engineers actively engaged in sustainability initiatives within their workplaces and communities.
  • Increase the number of resources and tools provided to young engineers through the campaign.
  • Increase events and activities that promote sustainability and resilience within the engineering profession.
  • Grow the #EngineeringChange community across multiple platforms.

The path to change

Launched the campaign at COP28 and raised awareness among young engineers and engineering organisations.

Recruit young engineers into the #EngineeringChange community and offer engagement opportunities.

Support young engineers in implementing sustainable practices and advocating for change in their workplaces.

We invite you to join us in empowering young engineers to lead the way in sustainability and resilience. Together, we can create a brighter, more sustainable future.
