Promoting an integrated outcome-led approach to the development of climate-compatible infrastructure

8 September, 2023 @ 10:30 am - 11:30 am EAT

Climate-compatible development transcends the notions of mitigation, adaptation, and resilience to adopt an approach that transforms development pathways to face the climate problem head-on. This approach champions development that minimises the harm caused by climate impacts, while maximising human development opportunities presented by a low-emissions, more resilient future. Climate resilience, adaptation, and decarbonisation can serve as entry points to developing climate-compatible infrastructure that supports sustainable development. This type of infrastructure development requires an integrated, holistic, and transdisciplinary approach to planning, design, implementation, and policymaking for infrastructure projects that reduce inequality and promote prosperity.

The session at Africa Climate Week, co-hosted with KDI and in collaboration with the Climate Champions Team, will discuss how this approach could be put into practice and will showcase solutions and examples from Africa, such as the Integrated & Inclusive Infrastructure Framework (3IF), a framework that puts together practical guidance for actors working in infrastructure and slum upgrading in Kenya.
