ASCE Chief Operating and Strategy Officer

The International Coalition for Sustainable Infrastructure hosted its Fall 2020 Symposium in November 2020, one year on after its launch. In this short video, Jerry Buckwalter, Chief Innovation Officer, American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), and Mark Hansford, Director of Engineering Knowledge, Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and ICSI Action Track Project Leaders, give an update on the Innovation Action Track.

Trends working group

The Future Trends working group will research global trends and hone the work already done by the global community to identify those trends that most impact climate-related and natural phenomena exacerbated by human activity. It will then provide insights and strategic advice on which future trends provide the opportunity for innovation to address these climate-related and natural phenomena.

Adaptation Champion working group

The Adaption Champion working group will focus on identifying current and planned infrastructure projects that address climate-related and natural phenomena exacerbated by human activity. This includes infrastructure projects related to, but is not limited to, climate-driven and climate-impacted sea-level rise, land use, heat, urban fires, energy, and human action (e.g., global competition for natural resources, carbon footprint). It will then highlight and communicate those best examples and practices discovered.

Accelerate innovative ideas that improve sustainable design/performance and resiliency of infrastructure

Action plan

  • Review ASCE Future World Vision future trends and scenarios research
  • Select future trends with most positive impact on sustainability and resilience
  • Develop short list of innovative activities/projects for testing in real world
  • Partner with organizations/cities/ companies on pilot projects
