After a virtual global tour taking in every region of the world, Seth Schultz, CEO of The Resilience Shift, is delivering his closing Brunel Lecture for the Institution of Civil Engineers.
The lecture will take place on Monday 17th January at 12:00 – 13:30 (GMT). See more information, speaker profiles, and how to register for the lecture here.
As the 13th in the series, this tour was a departure from the previous in-person format that had required travel to numerous destinations over the year. The challenges of Covid, and the desire of all the team to innovate and to avoid the carbon footprint of a global tour, motivated the organising team and Seth to derive a new format.
Each lecture was preceded by a roundtable to deep dive into the issues and challenges of each ICE region, bringing together regional and country ICE leaders and early-career professionals to debate the issues raised by Seth’s lecture. A selection of relevant regional issues were then included in Seth’s lecture, “21st Century leadership is partnership”, along with his main premise of the need for a step change across the engineering profession. Regional leaders also participated in the lecture to build on local discussion and bring in related audience questions.
The locally led discussion gave Seth and ICE valuable insights into the differences and similarities of the challenges facing engineers across the globe. These will help to inform ICE as well as the work of the International Coalition for Sustainable Infrastructure (ICSI) that is hosted by The Resilience Shift and of which Seth is a founding partner. You can watch back the whole fascinating series of regional lectures here.
The opening ICE International Brunel Lecture took place in December 2020 hosted by former ICE President, Rachel Skinner, CBE, and during 2021, was recreated locally for ICE regional groupings across East Asia, Europe, Middle East, Americas, Africa, South Asia, South East Asia, and Australasia. See more about each lecture with video recordings, and a write up feature.

At the closing lecture, Seth will be joined by ICE President 2021-22, Ed McCann, and a panel of thought leaders to reflect on Seth’s year-long journey and discuss how the engineering community can deliver a carbon-neutral and resilient society by mid-century. The Panel discussion and Q&A will be chaired by Mark Hansford, Director of Engineering Knowledge, ICE.
